** ZERO STARS **

In case you're busy and don't want to read this long rant, I can instantly let you know my thoughts about this place by saying, "You can't always believe what's on television."

What do I mean with this line? Well let me take you on a trip back in time where my lovely wife and I were watching one of our favorite foodie TV shows on the Food Network; Diners Drive-ins and Dives with host Guy Fieri. The very charismatic Guy Fieri visited Stoney Creek Inn and really made us believe that the food was amazing. After seeing this episode and finding out that this "gem" was in our backyard...okay, not literally our backyard but a mere 45 minute drive up north to Baltimore, MD.

From the start of the feature to the end, our mouths were watering as Guy Fieri dined on the most delicious looking crab cakes which appeared to be hey-uuuuuuuuge. Guy engaged the patron in witty banter as he sipped on beers and stuffed his face with fresh crabs, succulent shrimp and all around deliciously decadent seafood cooked to order. You'd think Guy found seafood heaven which made my wife and I giddy as little children as we repeated to each other over and over, "It's in Baltimore! We MUST visit it!!" Oh Guy you silver tongued devil, you had convinced us with your sweet pictures of beautiful seafood dishes and those crab cakes, dear God I'd travel a thousand miles for just a taste of those beautiful looking crab cakes.

So imagine the sheer delight of packing up our twin baby boys, the wife and piling them all into the minivan just to drive to the Stoney Creek Inn. The day was beautiful with the weather sunny, not a cloud in the sky with temperatures in the uppers 70's...as if God was smiling down upon us saying, "Yes my children, enjoy the bounty that I have given on to you my foodies." The minivan hummed and just the idea of those crab cakes kept me going as we left 495 and made our way to i-95 north towards Baltimore. The twins baby boys sat in their car seats, strapped in tightly and safe in their seats watching one of many Baby Einstein DVDs. By the time we were nearing Stoney Creek Inn, I had restarted the same Baby Einstein DVD 6 times and could hum the music from memory.

The minivan's nav-system guided us to a very industrial part of Baltimore and then proudly echoed, "You have arrived at your destination." Umm...no we haven't. The only thing around us was some old industrial loading docks and a BP gas station in the middle of no where. In the distance we saw a bridge and what appeared to be water. Desperate to reach our location, we pulled into the gas station and asked for directions. The kind woman behind the gas station counter seemed be a veteran of the question, "Can you please tell me where Stoney Creek Inn is located?" Thankfully before my sentence ended, she pointed towards the road with a smile that showed off some missing teeth and said, "It's down two lights before the bridge".

Jumping back into the minivan I shared the news with the wife happily proclaiming, "We're almost there!". 5 minutes later we saw the front of the building and eagerly parked and unloaded the boys and all related baby gear. Walking into the restaurant with giddy (almost mongoloid like smile on my face) faces, we asked for a table and encountered our first surprise.

"Did you call ahead and make a reservation?" asked a portly woman that appeared to be the manager as she shuffled staff to different areas of the restaurant.

"Do most people make reservations?" I asked a bit scared that no table would be avaible.

"Yes, it's highly recommended." she responded with a serious look on her face. Now I must tell you that the dining room and the areas in plain sight appeared to be empty. The portly lady saw us to a large table strategically located right next to the rest room. Hmmm...not the best seat, but the food must be worth such shitty seating. Our waiter stopped by to greet us and talked with a stuffy nose but seemed to be in good spirits. He brought me a beer and my wife enjoyed a coke. Diving into the menu, we decided to share a platter that had a bunch of fried goodies; french fries, sweet potato fries, fried cod, fried shrimp, fried oysters and those divine crab cakes. For the boys, we ordered child orders of crab cakes, a side of broccoli and apple sauce.

As we waited for our food to arrive the wife asked me if I smelled pee. "Nope, my nose is a bit stuffed up and all smell is Old Bay seasoning." Still upbeat and looking forward to try out the food, the wife decided to take a look at the restaurant to see the same sights enjoyed by Guy Fieri on his show. If you've ever seen the show, the restaurant is made to look like a very clean and up beat restaurant at the edge of some beautiful marina. Yeah, definitely NOT the case. Walking around the restaurant and reporting back my wife had a look on her face that instantly told me, "Ugh".

"The place is horrible and has no view" were the first words out of her mouth, "and the restaurant is empty, why did the lady ask us if we had reservations?!" Good point made by the wife, why had we been hassled about not having a reservation if the restaurant was empty? If you're trying to embrace new customers in a location that's not in the most easily accessible areas....why not make a customer feel more welcome? Quietly I still held onto some hope that I would experience some of the magic that Guy had experienced. The crab cakes, it's all about the crab cakes....

Finally, the food arrived and we dove into our plate. My wife and I had split the order and were told that it would cost us an additional $2 to split a plate. I took a taste of the fried code and was instantly surprised at the amount of heavy batter encasing the fish. Of the thumb sized fish piece I bit into, 75% was hard batter with just a taste of fish. Okay, still at this point I tried to remain positive. Let's taste the shrimp...same thing, small shrimp surrounded in hard overly spiced batter that didn't task like fresh shrimp. Still trying to stay positive I attacked the fried oysters...same damn batter. The dream was just about to begin fading when I told myself to dive into the crab cake.

Wielding my fork like a powerful sword, I plunged it deeply into the heart of my crab cake and pulled out a good sized chunk. Stuffing said chunk into my mouth I imagined myself to be Guy Fieri eating the fresh crab cake that the Stoney Creek Inn owner personally made for our favorite host (also the spokes person for TGI-Fridays). Did I taste paradise? Did images of nirvana flood my psyche due to the divine flavors of my crab cake?

No.

The only thing that ran through my mind was the phrase (made famous by my buddy Wagner during our trip to Spain back in 2003): "Oh, I have the buyers remorse". BTW, the origin of this phrase came from a Simpsons episode where Homer Simpson aquires the last Krusty Ribwich sandwich and is then instantly surrounded by a mob made up of other Ribwich lovers. All these people are making Homer addict like offers for the last ribwich sandwich. Homer finally accepts a car from a stereotypical Indian guy in exchange for Homer's last ribwich. After taking one bite of the ribwich, the guys says in a very depressed Indian accent "Oh, I have dee buyer's remorse".

Yes, I had the buyers remorse and instantly felt let down. Not awaiting my thoughts but clearing thinking the same exact thing, my wife was not pleased with anything on her plate. From the over cooked over battered super-crusted oyster, shrimp and fish...the look on her face said it all. Not worth the money and not worth the drive. For this reason I wrote what I wrote at the beginning of this blog entry.

Suddenly my eagerness and child like enthusiasm was replaced by a feeling of being cheated and misled by Guy Fieri. How could you Guy? I thought we were boys man! How could you make us foodies believe that this place was sooooo good? How could you make us think that the people working at this restaurant would welcome us with open arms when they hassled us about not having reservations in a virtually empty restaurant? How could you make us drive all the way to Baltimore with children and wife in tow when the food is not worth a 2 minute walk? I'd rather walk 5 mintes to the local safeway for imitation crab meat or even FROZEN crab cakes instead of driving all the way to this armpit of a restaurant.

I felt bad for my wife and felt bad for my boys as I had dragged them with me on this adventure hoping to experience at least a dash of the hyped up goodness seen on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. Sitting and stewing in utter disappointment, the wife and I just wanted to leave as fast as we could. Thankfully the boys were in good spirits and really had no idea of the shattered dreams and broken hopes their Fat Daddy was feeling....Guy, what the frak dude? You let me down big time. To make things worse the wife saw our waiter blowing his nose with a napkin, not washing his hands and then taking awaiting dishes to the three hungry patrons unaware of the snotty hands serving them. Yuck....

In order to salvage the day we headed to downtown Baltimore for a well deserved sweet treat courtesy of Vaccaro's Pastry Shop. Our family of four drown it's disappointed and lifted our spirits with the help of gelato, italian cookies and milk for the baby boys. It's funny how sweets can make all the bad stuff go away....

For anyone reading this that saw that episode of Diner's Drive-ins and Dives that convinced us to visit Stoney Creek Inn; save your money, save yourself a trip and do NOT go to Stoney Creek Inn. Not even a personal apology from Guy Fieri would make me go back to that hell hole of a seafood place...I'd rather slum it up and eat at big chain Red Lobster. At least Red Lobster doesn't sit its patrons next to a pee smelling restroom.

  1. Hey Fat Daddy,
Did you order crabs when you were there?

  2. I had the same fried platter myself and it was just so so. The staff was pretty rude and I got the same reservation comment too and I was alone. They were even more rude to someone on the phone. The crabs may be ok though but I'm not sure I'd go back for that. If you want great seafood go to Fat Crabs in Severn. It's off Hwy 100 exit 11 going south about a mile on the right. Not extremely friendly and really a dive but the food is great and you get a lot for the money. Best I've been to in Maryland!

  3. thanks fat daddy! me and the husband saw this episode recently and we seriously wanted to drive down just to have the crab cakes and crab! (and we're from nj)

  4. PANOSONIX:
We didn't try the crabs. Our mission was to try the crab cakes which on the show appeared to be heavenly. Imagine our disappointment when we found the food was worse than frozen food. For fresh crabs, we'd rather try any of the hundred Maryland restaurants near/around Kent Island, MD.

    ALCHIK:
Thanks for the suggestion! The wife, 2 monkeys and I are always up for a roadtrip provided the food is delish and we're not seated next to a pee stanky restroom. :-)

    SUMMER OLYMPICS 2009:
You are very welcome! If I can save ANYONE a trip to Stoney Creek Inn, this blog entry was not in vain. Hope you were able to find some other great Diner, Drive-in or Dive closer to your location. BTW, I see there are quite a few of great diners in and around the NJ/NYC area....is this true?

  5. Thanks for the posting. My husband and I were ready to go to the Inn when we read this blog. We will stick to our other B-more favorites, Bertha's (more so for mussels) in Fells Point and Seaside (crabs and crab cakes) close to Pasadena. If you are brave enough to deal with the pan handlers and drug addicts, go to the Lexington Market (crab cakes).

  6. Thanks Fat Daddy! My family was headed out there from Bowie MD w/2 sets of grandparents in tow for my son's 16th Bday dinner. The kids love FN and Guy is one of our favorite. I was disappointed not see more MD spots on his list. Hey Guy... what's up with the visits to our Nations Capt. & surrounding areas??? We have DC, MD, and VA. You can hit up a dozen on one flight!

  7. Sammi:

I agree with you! Guy and the rest of the Food Network goons should truly explore the DC/MD/VA area eats. The only person (non-food network) that attempted to do this was Anthony Bourdain. See his DC/MD episode of "No Reservations".

Even so, he merely touched the tip of all the DC food goodness available to those of us in this area.

Thanks for reading my blog and a HUGE thank you for posting a reply. Take care!

  8. I know this is an older blog...
The name of the show is Diners Drive ins and DIVES... If you're expecting a 4 star ballroom atmosphere type place-you were in the wrong place. It was on a TV show... of course they want to cast the best light on everything.I guarantee if you go to some of the Places they have been to you'll be shocked at the "differences" you find.

I've always have good food there ( I'm a regular...if I didn't like the food I wouldn't be.). Crabs many times and 9 out of 10 times they are good ( has every cut of steak you have ever had always been great?)-If they were light or not so good -ask for a replacement...
The Cream of Crab is always good.
I can honestly say I've NEVER had a bad crab cake ( always loaded with crab and tasty) there... broiled not fried of course.

Reservations...Yeah that seems odd to ask when you have a bunch of empty tables.
You say you were driving quite a distance to get there... ( and for some reason didn't go to route 695 to Ft Smallwood road.. VERY easy to get to this place by the way)--what if you drove two hours to get to a packed restaurant ( It's not always empty like that either ) to have to wait an hour or more to get in?
I'm just playing devils advocate - I also think it's strange that She asks about reservations when she has empty tables but you also don't know if she has a party of 8 or 10 due in in the next 45 minutes either. Frankly she's not always the best Hostess...And The waiter you speak of no longer works there...

It's quite possible I was there when you were there -I always sit at the round table near the big table near the bathrooms. Did you call 3 or 4 times to try to figure out how to get there?

    Have a good one.

Hey, first off thanks so much for the clarification on regarding the name of the show. As you'll see from my "old" blog entry, the name is correctly referenced and I realize that Stoney Creek is indeed a D-I-V-E.

That being said, i'm not the type of person to judge a place based soley on the environment, but I rate restaurants (dives included) base on the food AND the customer service. Both of which were lacking and on the low end for Stoney Creek Inn. The GREAT thing about MY blog is...that it is MY blog and reflects MY opinions.

I respect your obvious love for Stoney Creek although I can't understand how one can be a "regular" of a place with sub-parr food. But again, that is your opinion and your preference and God bless a country where we all have our own opinions...but I just don't share the same affection you have for Stoney Creek Inn and probably never will.

Now regarding the whole comment on getting to Stoney Creek and calling..I simply don't understand what you're talking about. Never called the place and thankfully I was able to rely on my good-old fashioned personality to ask the nice gas-station attendant for directions. Unfortunately I'm not a regular that knew how to get to Stoney Creek without directions.

I do however suggest you expand your horizons and try some places other than Stoney Creek. Baltimore is blessed with HUNDREDS of wonderful places where the food and customer service will make you forget about Stoney Creek. Try it out...maybe try something outside of Maryland.

    One final note:

I can see that you've been on my site for well over an hour (starting at 07:46:07 PM from Arnold, MD) reading and re-reading this entry multiple times before finally deciding to post a comment. Did I hit some nerve that caused you to stay on my blog for so long? Whatever the case for this 1 hour plus time, I'm glad you finally left a comment. As I do with all readers of my blog I will simply thank you for taking the time to read my blog and I also thank you for your comment.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Actually I answered the phone in the middle of typing my post in ( since you were curious about the length of time I spent there). No nerve- just felt like replying since i do frequent the place.

Sub par- yes that is indeed one opinion. It's not the best service in the world and not the worst. I've tried more than a few places- I always come back there.

The directions comment was not negative- I just recall someone having a hard time finding the place and thought it might have been you .

    Again Have a good one.

  11. You do realize that crabs are not in season in Maryland in March...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Anonymous,

You do realize that Stoney Creek Inn's website says crabs all year round.

You do realize that we ordered some crab cakes and not the LIVE crabs...so this wouldn't have been an issue.

I suggest you read the entire post again...but this time read it s-l-o-w-l-y to absorb what was written. You'll "realize" that the combination of bad food and horrible customer service is what cause me to give them such a low rating.

I'm amazed that this post has the most replies and stirs up such a wide range of emotion.

Thanks for reading and thanks for posting.

  13. You must be a complete boob ! My wife and myself saw the same DD&D and went this past weekend. No, it wasn't the biggest crabcake in the world, but it was damn good. In addition, it seems you expected Ruth's Chris decor. Oh, one more thing. Why didn't you sit outside, the water is right there. Perhaps you're cheap too because there was a 16oz CC on the menu, sorry you had to pay extra for 10 more ounces of crabcake.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Dear Anonymous,

You hit the nail on the head, yes I am indeed a "complete boob"....a huge giant one even has a very firm beautiful nipple. Look and admire my boobage, but please don't stare lest people think you're odd....

I'll give Stoney Creek the benefit of time and after reading your oh-so-eloquent comment hope they've improved on their food since my visit (which you can see was LAST year in March 2009). As I've explained to other people, my blog post was based on MY own experience for THAT particular visit; which was horrible.

Hmmm...how do you know I expected a "Ruth's Chris decor"? I may be a boob, but you must be a mind reader if you can peer into my mind. No where in my post did I say I expected such a grand setting; your assumption is clearly erroneous if you think I was expecting such fine decor. I knew the place was a dive and as such did NOT expect anything grand as far as the decoration. I love dives, I prefer dives and have eaten some of the BEST food at dives....but when the food is horrible, and the service is nasty it just makes for a overall bad experience.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit and applaud Stoney Creek for cooking up a tasty meal for you. Kudos to you! I'm hope you enjoyed this grand meal sitting your outdoor table gazing out on the industrial waterside view. Congrats congrats congrats big spender!

BTW, next time you'd like to effectively get your point across without sounding like a petty fool, try starting off our reply without an insult. I would have respected your opinion and may have even decided to give Stoney Creek another try had it not been for your childish reply.

Replies like yours makes me happy that I have not ventured back to Stoney Creek and I can take my "cheap" money to other more deserving seafood establishments.

Thanks for reading my blog and a HUGE thank you for posting a reply. Take care!

  15. ~ Fat Daddy...

First of all, I truly want to say I wish to explain my post. For the most part it was in jest. I do apologize for starting off the way I did. It was more for comedic effect than anything. Truth be told I just thought it was funny that the name of the show is Diners, Drive-In's and Dives and Stoney Creek is a dive. Anyway, I hope you understand what my meaning was. Perhaps Monday being my first day back from vacation also played into my tone. I hope you'll accept. Secondly, my name is Robert. I had already completed my post and didn't feel like going back once I got to the final point. So if you're cheap, I'm lazy. You're post also seemed to have the same personality that I have. No harm in what said.

Now that I've pulled my head out of my a**. I'll give you a little history on the Stoney Creek. A few years back the place was up for raffle. I don't know if the guy, Guy had on won it or not. At any rate, I thought the food was good. I will say this, you are correct. The Crabcake could have been bigger. I thought the taste was dead on.

I haven't had the chance to look over your site, but when I have time I will. I do want to give you another idea the next time you travel off of the Cap Belt. In Edgewater, south of Annapolis theres a place called the Edgewater Restaurant on Mayo Road. In advance, I warn you they don't care if you're there or not. It's kinda like a CrabCake Nazi. The ENTIRE party must be present before you're seated and damn they're slow. However, the lump crabcake is in fact a life changer. The last thing I'll say is this, the sides SUCK !!! Stuffed potato is a fried clump of I don't know what, so go for the fries, trust me ! A cheap salad bar is there for the taking as well with about 5 items and 6 dressings, along with beets (yuck).. Even after all of this I promise you, the crabcake is huge and the visit won't be lost. You'll soon forget that they don't care if you're there or not and there is no view. It looks and kinda smells like a barn.

Take care and I hope you don't let me being less than funny stand of the way of trying my suggestion.

  16. As every one else we saw the show on TV. We only live about 15 minutes away, so we were thrilled to try it out. We went the first time, we just got crab crakes, they were okay, nothing great, I have had worst. But then we treated our friends to a night of steamed crabs. I can honestly say I have never ever had bad crabs like these. They were disgusting, they must of got them right our of their backyard. I don't know what they did if they reheated or just old crabs or what. They were not seasoned, and we ordered 3 dozen, everyone of them tasted very fishy. Horrible, Horrible Horrible, won't ever go back. The appetizers were bad, and the cream of crab was so thick with cream and no crab. Honestly one of the worst places I have been. Service started out great, then down hill from there. Stay far, far away.

  17. Thanks! We play golf near by and were going to try this place because of Guy. Think we'll skip it. Makes we wonder about his other places????
